THE issue of land and inheritance is part of the hidden Ireland that causes deep trauma and tragedy, because it is not faced up to as it should be, according to Ireland East MEP Mairead McGuinness.

She told a conference in Athlone that planning for succession is vital, although it may prove to be emotionally difficult.

“But the foundation of succession planning is about setting out your own objectives. That is the responsibility of those in positions of leadership within the family,” she said. Ms McGuinness said whatever shape or form a succession plan takes on it is vital that it be communicated effectively to all of the family. Planning well in advance also allows hurt feelings time to heal.
