THE chief executives of Ireland’s largest lenders will be asked to appear before a parliamentary finance committee after raising lending rates and restricting loans amid the global shortage of credit.

“The banks are raising interest rates in an effort to maximise profit margins, while restricting access to new commercial lending,’ Fine Gael, which proposed the hearing, said yesterday. “The banks should support mortgage holders, rather than penalise them.”
