THE services economy contracted in April the fastest pace since October 2001 while new business volumes were also down for a third month in a row.

The NCB Purchasing Managers’ Service Index for businesses fell to 45.2 in April from 48.1 in March.

Readings above 50 signify expansion and readings below 50 show the sector has contracted.
