Sentences of up to 18 months as 14 convicted for serious tax fraud

THE Revenue Commissioners secured 14 convictions for serious tax evasion in 2007, according to its annual report.

This resulted in three people being given suspended sentences of 18, 12 and nine months and fines imposed totalling €99,370. In a further four cases guilty pleas were entered and sentencing is due this year.

It added that an additional 18 cases were referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions and directions to prosecute was given in another 19 cases.
