Increase of 3% in road-carried goods

LAST year Irish registered goods vehicles transported a total of almost 313 million tonnes of goods by road — an increase of 3% on the previous year and an increase of 254% over the last 10 years.

Activity in terms of tonne-kilometres decreased by 2.6% from 18,152 million in 2005 to 17,687 million in 2006.

There was an increase of 180% in the figure for tonne-kilometres over the 10-year period from 1996 to 2006. A total of 2,523 million vehicle kilometres were travelled in 2006, a decrease of almost 2% on the 2005 figure of 2,566 million and an increase of 115% on the 1996 figure.
