Growers urged to join producer groups

GROWERS in the €120 million fruit and vegetable industry have been urged to join producer groups to secure increased returns for their produce.

Food Minister Brendan Smith said the EU Producer Organisation Scheme provides growers with the potential to meet increased quality standards.

It will also strengthen their negotiating position in the marketplace where the multiples now handle some 80% of the retail sales for fresh produce.
