ICSA sheep committee vice chairman Gabriel Gilmartin has warned the public about giving pets, especially dogs, as presents for Christmas.

He said a lot of these animals are put down, or remain at large in the countryside, and become a huge liability when the lambing season starts.

“These dogs cause mayhem and severe hardship for farmers, but the responsibility lies firmly at the doors of those who just don’t listen to the experts.
