Kerry knife factory announces 28 job losses
Imperial Schrade Europe Ltd, which was established in Listowel 43 years ago, yesterday said that it was planned that the remaining 13 staff would be retained in warehousing and European sales and a small production line staff would also be selected from the current workforce.
The company, which was the first foreign-owned factory to open in Listowel, produces a range of pocket knives and cutting tools for DIY gardening.
Director and general manager Matthias Wolf said the job losses were a result of cost pressures from Chinese competitors and reduction in product demand, especially in the US following the September 11 attacks in which knives were used.
He also cited market and exchange rate difficulties due to the weakness of the dollar.
“We regret having to take this decision, which reflects in no way on the individual performances of our staff,” Mr Wolf added.
“We acknowledge the contribution of our dedicated staff over many years and particularly their understanding and co-operation during recent difficult times for the company.”
The redundancies will be effective from March 29 and the company has commenced discussions with employee representatives on severance terms.
The company is a subsidiary of the US-based Schrade Corporation, manufacturers of knives and cutting tools.
