Packaging ‘20% of weekly shopping bill’

UP to 20% of the average person’s weekly shopping bill goes on packaging costs alone, it has been estimated.

This highlights the need to reduce waste at its source, something that business is looking at seriously, from an economic point of view, if nothing else.

Ireland will have to recover 430,000 tonnes of packaging waste by 2005 to meet EU targets, according to official statistics.
