Digicel gets Haiti licence

DIGICEL, the Caribbean region mobile phone firm owned by Denis O’Brien, has become the first operator to be offered a GSM licence in Haiti. The licence award brings to nine the number of countries in which the company has a presence.

Digicel’s markets include Barbados, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and have a combined population of over 12 million people. The company aims to provide a seamless mobile service throughout the Caribbean region. It has an average market share of 60% in the markets in which it operates and is the biggest GSM operator in the region. The company also plans to extend its footprint into other Caribbean countries.

“Digicel is delighted to be the first company to be awarded a licence to operate a GSM network in Haiti. This is a tremendous opportunity for Digicel for further expansion,” said Mr O’Brien.
