THE Government must continue to attract foreign workers to Ireland despite a rise in unemployment, according to the Small Firms Association.

In its New Year statement, the business body argues it is still necessary to attract immigrant workers and recognise their contribution to the Irish economy by developing fair legislation to protect their rights.

"In a tougher economic climate, there is no doubt that the Government's uncertainty with regard to immigration policy has given rise to uncertainties in the public's mind, with regard to who should be entitled to jobs in Ireland which in turn has led to a hostile working environment developing in many businesses in Ireland," SFA assistant director Patricia Callan said.
