FINANCE MINISTER Charlie McCreevy plans to press ahead with the introduction of a carbon tax later this year despite opposition from employers' groups.

In a submission to the Department of Finance on the subject, IBEC said that the plans would damage Irish businesses and the economy.

Mr McCreevy said he has asked all relevant Government departments to "advance plans for general carbon tax with a view to introducing this from the end of 2004".
