SPENDING by Irish consumers shot up in the first three months of this year, according to the latest retail sales figures.

Retail sales volumes were 6% up on last year, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) data shows, with a 4.6% rise in March alone.

The figures indicate people are spending more on the high street. In 2004, consumer spending rose by just 3.2%.
