BUSINESS leaders have a responsibility to promote a culture of tax compliance within society, the Revenue Commissioners chairman told Cork’s top business people yesterday.

Speaking at a Cork Chamber of Commerce breakfast briefing, which was sponsored by the Irish Examiner, Frank Daly said it was time for a mature debate on the role of taxation in society and that people should approach the issue of paying tax more positively than in the past.

Business leaders needed to be aware that the function of taxes was to pay for government-provided goods and services, such as infrastructure and security. Businesses needed essential services like these in order to prosper, he said.
