On the doorstep of UCC: a domestic lesson in class

Corner-set Oakhurst has UCC, and the five-star Hayfield Manor, on its doorstep, says Tommy Barker

One of the best, stand-out homes in the vicinity of Cork’s UCC campus is this period-era home, Oakhurst, every bit as attractive inside as its well-kept exterior might suggest.

Dating to c 1920s and Edwardian in style, the end terrace Oakhurst is in stand-out position also, on a private and mature corner site, right at the junction of Donovans Road and College Road, with UCC to the west, and the five-star Hayfield Manor hotel is 200 metres way to the south. Cork city centre’s a ten minute stroll to the east.

Full of interior charm, and decorated with an appropriate deference to its era of construction, it is marked out externally from the get-go by its distinctive front/corner box window with slate roof, and by its side gable entrance, which gives it its own individual internal layout and appeal.

Auctioneer Trish Stokes of Lisney says the c 1,785 sq ft four-bed home with its exterior in a mix of red brick and dash is beautiful, and “is in excellent condition throughout, with a wealth of features expected from a property constructed in 1920.” She guides at €495,000, and expects trade-up, and trade-in interest: as equally it may be picked up by bidders coming back to Cork from abroad, keen to pick up an ‘original.’

The Price register shows Oakhurst last sold in late 2013/early 2014, making a reported €360,000 , after it had launched in’13 with a €375,000 price tag, in good condition, for its then, long-time family owners.

It has since had further investment and upgrades, with gas central heating and D1 BER. In the past UCC was often a buyer for the larger and more impressive properties on College Road and indeed Donovans Road for faculty offices, but the domesticated Oakhurst isn’t likely to be in its sights.

“The current owners have made sure that, where possible, original features have been restored, or replaced, without interfering with the original character,” says Ms Stokes, instancing the presence of sash windows, which are double glazed, with the appropriate weights and pulleys, some stained glass features and part-glazed internal doors, original broad floorboards, dados, picture rails and some ceiling roses, with encaustic tiling in the hall.

That hall’s past a glazed gable entrance porch with cheery red door, and within there’s a formal 18’ by 12’ drawing room, double aspect with bay window and fireplace, dining room with deep red walls and fireplace, kitchen with tiled floor and library/snug off, plus a utility room.

The stairs return has a bathroom and separate WC, and the first floor has two bedrooms, with two more overhead at attic level, with fireplaces as attractive visual features in the bedrooms.

VERDICT: Ms Stokes describes as one of Oakhurst’s ‘true beauties’ the privacy of the mature and enclosed private gardens, in front, and beside Donovans Road, with off-street parking and private garage access, plus the walled, corner property has a separate pedestrian gate.
