Donegal's Sweeney withdraws from by-election race

One of the six candidates in Thursday's by-election in Donegal South West has withdrawn from the race.

Independent candidate Anne Sweeney's name will appear on the ballot paper, but she is calling on the public to boycott the election.

The hotel owner from Dunfanaghy took the unusual step of not doing any door-to-door canvassing in this by-election, instead using the internet and media to highlight her stance on various issues.

She told Highland Radio that the political developments of the past few days prompted her to make the decision.

"This by-election is a complete farce," she said.

"We're going to have to go back again in three weeks time for the General Election. I will certainly be running. I'm withdrawing from this one (ie the by-election)."
