The conflict broke out in April 2024 when a power struggle erupted between the army and a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Force.

Aid agencies in Ireland and the World Health Organisation have called for an end to fighting in Sudan, now reaching its 1000th day, saying 21m people “desperately need food” there.
