Watch: Ukraine says 19 killed in Russian attack on western city of Ternopil
19 people were killed and 66 wounded, including 16 children, in a heavy overnight Russian attack that struck a residential tower block in the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday (November 19). Reuters footage from the city showed a building's upper floors torn away and firefighters on a ladder extinguishing flames.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed multi-storey residential buildings had been hit in Ternopil, and said others may be trapped under the rubble. He urged allies to increase pressure on Russia to end its nearly four-year-old war in Ukraine, including by providing Kyiv with more air-defence missiles. The Ukrainian leader said he would meet Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, later Wednesday as part of his efforts to diplomatically isolate Russian President Vladimir Putin and bring more international pressure to bear on him.
