Shooting in South Carolina tourist town leaves 11 people injured

A shooting in a popular South Carolina tourist town left 11 people wounded, and police fatally shot one person, authorities said.

Myrtle Beach officers responded to a disturbance involving several people on Saturday night in which someone began firing a weapon.

In a statement, the department said that “based on the immediate threat”, an officer then shot one person, who died from their injuries.

The person’s name was not immediately released, and it was not clear whether they were a suspect.

The department said 11 people who sustained injuries were receiving medical treatment.

In North Carolina a shooting at a college left one person dead and six others wounded and prompted a campus lockdown early on Sunday, the university said.

The shooting occurred in the centre of Elizabeth City State University’s campus following Yard Fest, the final event of the university’s weeklong Viking Fest celebration, the university said in a statement.

A 24-year-old man who was not a student was pronounced dead. His identity was not immediately released pending notification of his family, the statement said.

Four people sustained gunshot wounds, including three students, while two other students were injured during the commotion.

None of the injuries was considered life-threatening. All the injured were taken to hospital for treatment, the statement said.
