The former president of the European Commission has said he âmade a mistakeâ in listening to David Cameron after being told not to interfere with the Brexit debate in the UK.
Jean-Claude Juncker said he âshould not have listenedâ to the former UK prime minister and âspoken outâ on the issue.
It comes as the row over political lobbying in the UK, sparked by Mr Cameronâs use of Government contacts to lobby on behalf of Greensill Capital, deepened â prompting a series of probes into the matter.
Speaking to the , Mr Juncker said that Mr Cameron told him not to conduct interviews with the British press.
âI should not have listened to David Cameron,â he said.
The UK left the European Union on January 31 2020, seven years after the referendum ordered by Mr Cameron in 2013.
The decision to leave â by 52% to 48% â left the EU in shock, and Mr Cameron resigned as British prime minister shortly afterwards.
A deal was finally brokered between current prime minister Boris Johnson and Mr Junckerâs successor Ursula von der Leyen, after spates of sometimes hostile negotiations that were hindered by the coronavirus crisis.
âI made a mistake because I did not defend the EUâs point of view in the UK,â said Mr Juncker.
