The Queen's private secretary has confirmed he is leaving but says he is confidently handing on the job, knowing the monarch's "unwavering commitment as sovereign" has the "full and active" support of her family.

Sir Christopher Geidt is stepping down in October after acting as the channel of communication between Downing Street and the head of state for the past 10 years.
