Local media reports that the bomb exploded in the central office parking lot of the Italian Post positioned between two cars.

Police are reported to have ruled out terrorism and are investigating the possibility of it being a demonstrative act by environmental activists.

Earlier: There has been an explosion in central Rome according to local media reports.

The blast is thought to have occurred in Marmorata Street, near a post office.

Fire and bomb disposal squads are at the scene.
