A white man accused of shooting dead nine black parishioners at a South Carolina church has begun easing into his role as his own lawyer, although his former defence team said it wanted a larger role in the case.

Defence lawyers were demoted to advisers on Monday when a judge ruled Dylann Roof could begin representing himself in his federal trial on dozens of charges, including hate crimes and obstruction of religion.
