Youngsters praised for 999 call over fire - while adults filmed blaze

Two youngsters have been praised for phoning 999 to report a fire - while adults filmed and took pictures of the blaze.

Crews were called to the Queen Elizabeth Park in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, on Wednesday evening after a number of trees caught light.

A message posted on the Stapleford Fire Station Facebook page said two of the town's "younger residents" named Jay and Rhys rang the emergency services while "grown-ups" tried to capture the fire on camera.

The boys told the emergency operator where the fire was - as well as what colour tops they were wearing to help the fire crews track them down.

Firefighters arrived to find a number of trees alight and the fire "rapidly spreading".

Incident commander Kevin Tedds said: "The boys' quick thinking and actions took us straight to the fire. The crew acted swiftly getting an extended hose reel to work, limiting the fire spread and damage."

A message on the fire station's facebook page said: "While a number of "grown ups" filmed the fire and took photos on their phones, Reece and Jay took it upon themselves to call 999 and ask for the Fire Service."
