Man freed on bail in 3-month-old baby murder probe

A man arrested on suspicion of murdering a baby boy has been released on police bail.

The man was detained in connection with the murder of the three-month-old on Saturday in the Boscombe area of Dorset.

A murder investigation was launched after the boy died in hospital after succumbing to injuries sustained in an incident at a flat on Carysfort Road.

Dorset Police received a report on Friday afternoon from the ambulance service that the baby had been injured at the flat.

He was taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital before being transferred to Southampton General Hospital for specialist treatment, but was pronounced dead on Saturday morning.

Detective Inspector Richard Dixey, of the major crime investigation team, confirmed that a murder investigation had been launched, adding that the circumstances were being treated as "suspicious".

He added: "I would appeal for the family to be given privacy at this extremely difficult time."

A spokesman for Dorset Police confirmed that the man had been released until the middle of May pending further inquiries.

A post mortem examination is due to take place in due course.
