Sergeant Baba Dembele from the anti-terrorism unit in the capital Bamako said it was believed some of the attackers had entered the luxury hotel where the mission has its headquarters.

The EU mission released a statement on Twitter saying no personnel had been wounded during the attack in the capital.

It comes about four months after jihadis attacked the Radisson Blu hotel in Mali's capital, killing 20 people.

In January, other extremists attacked a cafe near a hotel popular with foreigners in Burkina Faso's capital, killing at least 29 people.

And last week it claimed responsibility for an assault on a beach in Ivory Coast leaving at least 19 dead.
