Some UN member states are making Syrian conflict worse says Oxfam

Oxfam has said the actions of some member states of the United Nations Security Council are making the conflict situation in Syria worse.

The charity, along with 29 other aid agencies, is calling on world powers to work to protect the current ceasefire in Syria.

The 30 aid organisations have published a new report on the war in Syria, titled Fuelling the Fire.

CEO of Oxfam Jim Clarken, has said a different and more productive approach is needed to resolve the conflict: “As Irish people, we know better than most, that in order to deliver sustainable peace into the future, you need the engagement of the International community as well as the warring fractions to be brought to the table.

“But it must be done in a responsible way and that is not what we have seen.

“It is welcome that there is a cease-fire now but there is so much to be done and the International community must hold the security council to account to deliver on its mandate and its responsibility.”
