'Jungle camp' could be destroyed today

Parts of the refugee camp in Calais - known as the Jungle - could be demolished today, after a French court ruled it needed to be destroyed.

Authorities say around 1,000 migrants will need to be rehomed, although charities warn many more are affected.

Thousands of refugees - including children - are living in squalid conditions there as they try to cross the Channel to reach Britain.

Caroline Anning from Save the Children in the UK has said she is very disappointed by the ruling: “We are incredibly disappointed that the ruling has gone ahead to demolish all the homes that are around this area of the camp.

“We’re pleased they are keeping community infrastructure which has been built up by a huge effort from volunteers and refugees themselves but whats the point of community infrastructure without a community.”
