Chimpanzees no longer used in US research
The US government is to stop using chimpanzees for research.
50 chimps in Federal custody are to be sent to a sanctuary called ‘Chimp Haven’ for retirement according to health authorities.
Chimp Haven is located in Keithville, Louisiane and has over 200 acres of forest for chimps to roam free.
Chimpanzees are humans' closest living relative and share 98% of the same genes.
However, other non-human primates will continue to be used for research.
