Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has apologised over certain aspects of the Iraq war and admitted that it may have contributed to the rise of ISIS.

In an interview that will air in the US later, he admitted there were mistakes made before invading the country in 2003, as well as in the aftermath.

Sky's political reporter Darren McCaffrey has said Blair also acknowledges the impact those decisions might have had on the current conflict in the region.

“He is not apologising for the war necessarily itself but what he is apologising for the planning operation put in place didn’t work out as he intended,” Mr McCaffrey said.

“And also rather interestingly admits that there is an element of truth to think the Islamic State is the consequence.”
