Thousands more refugees expected as Austria set to bring in new laws

Thousands more refugees from Syria and Afghanistan are expected to cross European borders today.

More than 12,000 entered through Hungary and Serbia into Austria and Germany at the weekend.

Syrian and Afghan refugees have been crossing the border with Hungary all weekend from Serbia.

They are weary, sick and frightened after weeks of travelling in the most treacherous conditions imaginable.

While Hungarian police are for now allowing them to cross the border, they are greeted by 2 metres of barbed wire and the threat of arrest following new legislation introduced by the parliament passed last week, which criminalises anyone climbing over the new razor wire.

It is unclear when the police will enforce these new rules but as tensions continue to fray it may only be a matter of time.
