'Tainted alcohol' kills 41 in India

At least 41 people have died after drinking tainted alcohol in a slum in India’s financial hub of Mumbai, police said.

Police officer Deepak Gaikwad said 21 other people are critically ill in hospital after drinking the cheap spirits in Malad, northern Mumbai.

Police arrested three men and are questioning them about making and selling the drink to poor workers.

Devendra Fadnavis, the top elected official in Maharashtra state, has ordered an investigation.

Deaths from illegally-made alcohol are common in India because the poor cannot afford licensed drinks.

Bootleg spirits are often spiked with chemicals such as pesticides to increase their potency.
