NY subway assault suspect shot dead

A suspect in an assault on the New York City subway has been shot dead by police after he slashed an officer with a knife, authorities said.

The incident happened on Coney Island in Brooklyn.

Police said the officer was taken to a hospital with neck and shoulder injuries. He is expected to survive.

The officer apparently fired twice.

Preliminary reports indicate that the attacker had assaulted a woman in the station before the police officer intervened.
