Boko Haram attacks Nigerian city

Nigeria’s military has defended an attack on the north-east Nigerian city of Gombe by Boko Haram Islamic extremists.

Scores of the rebels assaulted Gombe and engaged in heavy fighting with the army. Two air force jets also attacked the insurgents.
