Policewoman dies in new Paris attack

A policewoman shot near Paris has reportedly died after a second attack on police in the French capital in consecutive days.

12.45pm Update: Emmanuel Cravello, of the Alliance police union, confirmed that she later died of her injuries.

The officer and another victim were fired on in Montrouge, on the southern edge of the city, this morning.

Paris police said the second victim was a street cleaner.

It came amid heightened tension across France after yesterday’s massacre at the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper, in which 12 people, including two police officers, were killed.

Paris police said it was too early to draw any connection between the attacks.

There were also reports this morning of an explosion at a kebab shop near a mosque in Lyon.

Ahmed Sassi, who saw the shooting from his home, said: “There was an officer in front of a white car and a man running away who shot.”

He said the gunman wore dark clothes but no mask, adding: “It didn’t look like a big gun because he held it with one hand.”

Authorities are doing their utmost to identify and arrest the attacker, according to France’s leading security official, interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

He cautioned against jumping to conclusions the day after masked gunmen killed 12 people, including two police, in an assault on a satirical newspaper.

Mr Cazeneuve said the officer in the latest attack had stopped to investigate a traffic accident when the firing started.

Mr Cazeneuve left an emergency government meeting to travel to the scene.

France is on its highest level of alert after yesterday’s assault on the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper killed 12.

Several arrests were made overnight in the hunt for two remaining suspects over the massacre at the newspaper.
