Burkina Faso’s leader steps down after protests

Burkina Faso’s leader of 27 years has stepped down following a wave of violent protests against his bid to seek a fifth term in power.

In a statement read out on national television today, Blaise Compaore said elections would be held in 90 days.

It is not clear who will take power in the interim.

A spokesman for Mr Compaore also confirmed he is resigning.

Yesterday, protesters stormed the parliament and unleashed unrest around the country, successfully blocking a vote to allow Mr Compaore to seek re-election next year.
