The chief constable of South Yorkshire Police has said the BBC put his force in “a very difficult position” over a planned search of Cliff Richard’s home.

David Crompton told the UK's Home Affairs Select Committee that his colleagues in the media office were convinced that the broadcaster would run a story about the investigation without some kind of deal.
