US defence secretary Chuck Hagel has said it is far less likely that America will undertake an Iraq rescue mission because fewer refugees are stranded on Sinjar Mountain.

Speaking to reporters at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, Mr Hagel said air drops of food and water had sustained the refugees and that air strikes on Islamic State militants had allowed many of them to escape.
