Men found on train tracks 'seriously injured'

Two men have suffered multiple serious injuries after being found on railway tracks near a busy station in England.

British Transport Police (BTP) said it was not yet clear how the men came to be on the railway line in an area at the north end of Birmingham New Street Station today.

However, officers are looking closely at a bridge which runs over the track as one line of inquiry.

The incident disrupted rail services to and from the station from 6am.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it had been called out to “two men who had reportedly fallen from a bridge” near the station at 5.50am.

Medics found both men, described as being in their 20s, had suffered “multiple serious injuries” and were later taken to the city’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A police spokesman said: “Officers from BTP West Midlands attended Birmingham New Street Station after reports of two men on the railway line.

“Medics attended and administered first aid to the men at the scene.

“At this time it is unclear how the men suffered their injuries and the incident is being treated as unexplained, while officers continue inquiries and establish the full facts as to how the men came to be on the tracks.”

He added: “We are looking at the bridge as one line of inquiry as to how these two men came to be there.”

The police have urged anyone with information to call on 0800 405040.

The incident meant some Arriva Trains Wales, CrossCountry and London Midland rail services were running with delays up to 20 minutes, according to National Rail Enquiries.

Network Rail said normal running had resumed but cautioned rail passengers to expect some residual delays between Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
