The Jamaican government plans to partially decriminalise possession of small amounts of cannabis in what supporters are praising as a long overdue rethinking of drug laws.

Justice minister Mark Golding said the cabinet is backing a proposal to make possession of no more than 57 grammes (2oz) of marijuana a petty offence that could result in a fine, but not a criminal arrest.
