India rape victim's mother attacked

Three men have been arrested in northern India for attacking the mother of a rape victim after she refused to withdraw her police complaint.

Police said the men, including the father of the man accused in the May 11 rape, followed the mother into a field and beat her severely.

She was in critical condition in a hospital in Etawah, a small town in Uttar Pradesh state.

Meanwhile, investigators sought clues in a gang-rape elsewhere in the state that left two teenage cousins dead.

The cousins were raped and killed by attackers who then hung their bodies from a mango tree. Angry villagers held a silent protest over alleged police inaction in the case.

Four men have been arrested, including two police officers.
