A pregnant woman who was loading groceries into the boot of her car with her husband was struck and killed by a private snowplough in New York City, police said.

Her baby was successfully delivered by Caesarean section.

Police said 36-year-old Min Lin was struck by a vehicle with a snowplough attached to it as it backed up in the rear car park of a supermarket in Brooklyn.

They said she was rushed to the Maimonides Medical Centre where she was declared dead.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said the nearly full-term baby boy was in a critical condition in the neonatal intensive care unit. She said he weighed 6lb 6oz.

The woman’s husband was not hurt in the incident.

The driver has not been charged.
