Pussy Riot duo consider running for Moscow elections

Two members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot say they may run for seats in this year’s election for the Moscow city parliament.

Nadia Tolokonnikov, appearing alongside fellow band member Maria Alekhina at an event on the sidelines of the Berlin Film Festival, said the move into politics “is worth a try”.

The election will most likely be held in September, although no exact date has been set.

Tolokonnikov and Alekhina were released in December after nearly two years in jail.

They were convicted of hooliganism after staging a protest in a Russian church.

They say third Pussy Riot member Yekaterina Samutsevich, who was released in October 2012, will not be involved in the work of their human rights organisation Zone of Law, which will campaign on behalf of prisoners.
