Bomb disposal experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a suspected mortar bomb discovered on a Norfolk beach.

Part of the seafront at the village of Hemsby, eight miles north of Great Yarmouth, was cordoned off after the discovery at around 8.15am, Norfolk police said.

The device, thought to be historic, was discovered by a member of the public.

“Personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team assessed the item and a controlled detonation took place at around 2pm,” a police spokeswoman said.

The cordon was lifted after the area was made safe.
