An explosion at a weapon cache in a Libyan air base and an attack on checkpoint in an eastern city have killed 13 people.

Officials said a storeroom housing tank ammunition at the air base in the southern town of Barek al-Shati, exploded, killing 10 and wounding 20. It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.

One official said a group of looters were trying to smuggle the ammunition out at the time of the blast.
