Russian court grants bail for Greenpeace activist

One of the jailed Greenpeace protesters has been granted bail by a Russian court, the first foreign activist eligible to be released from jail while awaiting trial over an oil rig demonstration.

The court in St. Petersburg today set bail at 2 million roubles (€45,000) for Brazilian Ana Paula.

Greenpeace said it would transfer the money as soon as possible.

Thirty people aboard a Greenpeace ship were detained following the September action.

Investigators have added hooliganism to the initial charge of piracy which has not been dropped yet.

Another St. Petersburg court granted bail to three Russians involved in the protest.

Judges in Greenpeace hearings had until now agreed with prosecutors’ claims that foreign activists were a flight risk.
