Australian wildfires kill man as hundreds flee

One man was killed, scores of homes were destroyed and hundreds of people were forced to evacuate as almost 100 wildfires burned across Australia’s most populous state today.

Milder conditions were helping firefighters after yesterday’s unseasonably hot temperatures, but strong winds fanned flames across the parched landscape and threatened towns surrounding Sydney.
