A Chinese immigrant accused of killing her unborn child by eating rat poison while she was pregnant has escaped a murder charge by admitting criminal recklessness in a US court, in a deal reached with prosecutors.

Prosecutor Terry Curry said Bei Bei Shuai, 36, pleaded guilty in Indianapolis to the misdemeanour and was sentenced to time served, 178 days. Murder and foeticide charges were dropped.
