A senior US intelligence official has warned that the Syrian conflict is set to run for 'many years to come'.

David Shedd, the deputy director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, said Radical Islamist rebels will gain sway over the opposition to Bashar al-Assad unless they are kept in check.

The Free Syrian Army - which leads the rebel groups - said that it is growing frustrated with the lack of support from the West.
