Bolshoi acid attack suspect held

A suspect has been arrested by police investigating an acid attack on the artistic director of Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre.

Moscow police said in a statement that they were questioning someone over the attack but did not provide any other details.

Bolshoi Theatre spokeswoman Katerina Novikova said the suspect was detained today.

The theatre’s artistic director, Sergei Filin, suffered severe burns to his eyes and face when an unidentified attacker threw sulphuric acid in his face as he was returning home from work on January 17. He is now undergoing treatment in Germany.

His colleagues have said the attack could have been in retaliation for his selection of certain dancers over others for prized roles.
